Check 01 · before you believe a number
Hang a line next to every claim. See how far it leans.
Plumbline is a small reference for people looking at ways to add a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. Side-income offers are full of claims about time, effort and pay. We hold a straight line next to them, so you can see which ones stand and which ones lean.
The wall
The claims that sound best lean furthest.
The top claim promises money for almost no time. It leaves out what the work is, what it costs and who pays. The bottom one is duller: about four hours a week, fees listed, taxable income. It's the only one you could actually plan around.
A plumb line doesn't judge whether a wall is pretty. It shows whether it stands. Reading offers the same way, by what they leave out, is quicker than trying to guess who's honest.
Plumb check
Common claims, and what to hold against them.
None of these phrases are proof of fraud on their own. They're places to slow down and ask for the detail that would make the claim stand straight.
| Claim | Lean | What's missing | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Minutes a day" | far | What the work actually is | A description of one real task and how long it takes |
| "No experience needed" | slight | Who pays, and for what | The client or platform, and its published terms |
| "Unlimited earnings" | far | The rate and the limits | A rate per task or hour, and how much work is usually available |
| "Start today, just a small fee" | far | Why you pay to work | Nothing. Genuine work pays you; walk away |
| "Paid weekly" | slight | Minimums and holds | The payout threshold and the first-payment delay |
| "About 4 h/week, fees listed" | true | Little | Check the tax side for your country |
Out of true
What pulls a plan off the line once you start.
Even honest work leans if these aren't counted. Readers say these are what they wish they'd planned for in the first month.
- FEES
The rate isn't what lands.
Platforms and payment services take a share. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Small amounts still count.
Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- TIME
Tasks take longer than listed.
Time your first ten tasks yourself. That's your real rate, not the advertised one.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Requests to pay or move money.
Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
